Why open enrollment?

Why does Avon Schools open enrollment to students who live outside Avon-Washington Township? There are a few reasons.

  1. In Indiana, education dollars follow students. All students benefit when we have a growing enrollment. We can maintain our excellent educational experiences due to the increased revenue that follows each additional student.
  2. Controlled growth without compromising class sizes. District leaders can assign open enrollment students to schools and classrooms where there are open desks. Open enrollment allows us to maximize growth without compromising class size targets.
  3. Population growth is slowing in Avon. Even though there are new homes being built, population growth in Avon-Washington Township is slowing. More people are aging in place, remaining in their homes after their children graduate. Home prices remain high, making it harder for many young families to move into Avon. And birthrates are low. Adding students by open enrollment helps offset plateauing enrollment increases.
