Indiana All-State Jr. High Orchestra

Indiana All-State Jr. High Orchestra

The Indiana Chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) sponsors the Junior All-State Orchestra. This event will take place in concurrence with the Indiana Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference in Fort Wayne on January 13-15.

Exceptional 6th, 7th, and 8th grade string players from around the state of Indiana are invited to audition for this prestigious group. Accepted students have the opportunity to play alongside other talented students and to work with and learn from prestigious professional musicians and conductors. Students will have their first rehearsal together on Friday, January 14, and will conclude with a performance on Saturday, January 15. (Learn more here.)

We are excited that 20 students from North and South auditioned. Three students from AMS South were accepted. Congratulations to Quinn, Gwynn, and Malak.

These three students will have the wonderful opportunity to work with guest conductor Jennifer Drake. Inspired by the power of music to connect people, ideas and communities, Jennifer Drake is a conductor, violist, teacher, clinician, and camp director. Jennifer is known for her versatility, humor, and energy. Jennifer is the Music Director of the Serenata Orchestra, the assistant conductor and principal violist for the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival and the Music Director for the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.  Jennifer has enjoyed an international chamber music career, performing at the 33rd International Viola Congress in Iceland and the International Bass Clarinet Convention in Holland. She has performed concerts in Iceland, Holland, Denmark, Romania, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria and Canada. Jennifer is the founder of Idaho Viola Camp. She is also the co-artistic director for the Idaho Orchestra Institute. Both camps provide students with unique outdoor experiences, in addition to high quality musical engagement.  Recent awards and honors include winning the 2018 International Conductors Workshop and Competition, receiving an Alexa Rose Foundation grant, and earning a fellowship with the Allentown Symphony in 2017.
